University Book Store Turns 125!
This year marks an incredible milestone for a beloved cornerstone of Seattle’s University District: the University Book Store is celebrating 125 years of connecting people through the power of books, culture, and community. Since first welcoming customers on January 10, 1900, the bookstore has become an anchor for students, faculty, neighbors, and book lovers alike. Beyond being a destination for quarterly textbook purchases, the University Book Store has hosted notable authors throughout its history, celebrated its customers with countless events, partnered with student and community groups, and been a steadfast champion of creativity, education, and connection in the heart of the U District.
With humble beginnings, the University Book Store first opened in the cloakroom adjacent to the UW president’s office on campus. By 1924, the store moved to its current location on “The Ave”—a decision that cemented its role as a hub for both the academic and local communities. The move “required three days and 45 truck trips to haul the stock — mostly text books and student supplies — off campus to 4326 University Way. Doors first opened on January 28, 1925 — the bookstore’s 25th year.” (historylink.org)
Over the decades, the store expanded its offerings, weathered economic storms like the Great Depression, added a cafe, and adapted to meet the needs of its diverse audience while staying true to its vision–nurturing the life of the mind through their products, services and experiences.
Today, the University Book Store is a place where Huskies and Seattleites alike can gather to explore ideas, discover new stories, and connect with a community that spans generations. As one of the only independent bookstores affiliated with a major university that maintains direct student involvement on its board of directors, it remains a unique and cherished institution.
